Profitec Pro 400 espresso machine review after 6 months of use

Here's my review after a while using my Profitec Pro 400 e61 espresso machine. I talk about temperature, flow control, pressure and temperature gauges, wifi switch, cleaning, and texturing milk while making a shot. Note that I suggest using the high temperature setting and not flushing because I normally turn the machine off after use rather than leaving it on all day. If it has been on for hou...

I show you how to do a Blooming Espresso recipe, designed by Scott Rao for the Decent espresso machine, but I'm instead using my La Pavoni Europiccola. This shot is done with 5'C hotter water, with a strong pull to pre-infuse followed by a 30 second bloom with the lever held still, followed by a full pressure pull to finish the shot at a 1:2 to 1:3 ratio. This gives a sweeter shot, which is mor...
La Pavoni Europiccola or Professional? Quick refill hack.
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.Год назад
When choosing between Europiccola or the Professional, the main difference is the boiler size, which is 0.8l in the Europiccola, and 1.6l in the Professional. Bigger boiler = slower start time but less chance of the water running out too soon. This refill hack means running out of water is not so big a problem which makes Europiccola the winner in my book.
Scott Rao's Filter 2.1 Decent recipe on a La Pavoni Espresso Machine

In this video, I show how you can make filter coffee on a La Pavoni Europiccola espresso machine. I use coffee expert Scott Rao's Filter 2.1 method designed to be used with a very high-tech Decent espresso machine, but it can be made on a very low-tech La Pavoni because it has the required control to run at very low pressure of 0.3 bar instead of the "normal" espresso pressure of 9 bar.

      That's a tough one. I have heard the MaraX is not as good build quality as the Profitec, but I haven't seen one in person to compare. I would think adding a temperature indicator to a Profitec would make it the better choice because you don't start using it until the temp is right. The cold touch steam wand and water outlet on the Profitec are very nice to use. There is not a single thing about the build of the Profitec that I don't like except that a water level indicator would have been helpful instead of just stopping when it gets low.

    Hey, this is the first video I really enjoyed watching cause you mention a lot of things others guys don't. I have a LP Esperto Abile and did your upgrades as well as more like B-Push steam valve, replaced plastic group sleeve with brass, added AirBuster because my lever was very spongy at the end, piston seals with silicone, digital group thermometer (about €23) and more. One thing to mention for those thinking about adding the Bong isolator mod - it takes a lot longer and more water flushes to bring the group to required temperature for the first shot - it won't matter for multiple shots as once warmed up it keeps the temp at over 80 degrees C as opposed to staring from 30 or 60. Your shot's flow looks amazing on the portafilter's bottom! BTW - these thermometers for frothing milk are really great, super responsive and do work - had to order from the US but arrived to Slovenia and have been using them for 5 months with no issues - cheap too! Just search on US amazon for "kt thermo instant read 2-inch dial thermometer". Did you ever descale your machine? I just did using a product designed for the purpose but now my boiler looks stained or rusty inside - it did remove minor scale (use only quality bottled water even fro cleaning),

    Thanks for the very helpful video on the temperature stability; I have a pressure gauge setup on the mashroom valve, so I have no information about the actual heat. The thing what I do not understand that in the user manual it’ says that the temprerature must be approx 98 C in the highest position (position II) and it’s around 94 in the video. Is it another noticable difference?

    • @michaelporter000
      @michaelporter000 3 месяца назад

      I heard that the 3 position switch is low temp for dark, medium temp for medium or light roast, and high temp just for better steam, but I always use the high temp. After 40 minutes the group is at the right temp of around 94 'C, but it can vary up over 100 if left on long enough. That's why I would recommend swapping the pressure gauge for a temp gauge so you know what it really is. HX machines don't have accurate temp control on the group, even though presumably the boiler pressure control is accurate because it uses PID.

  • @jimmythefish
    @jimmythefish 3 месяца назад

    This is a great summary and very helpful, thanks. I’ve been looking at HX machines as I anticipate in the coming years that my wife and two teenaged daughters will require a machine that can handle a high volume in a morning. The heat up time doesn’t really bother me as I’d use the smart plug in the morning and on weekends just leave it on most of the day. I’ve been looking at this, the ECM version and the Mechanika Max. The decision may come down to whether we realistically will plumb the machine to waterline at some point, in which case I’d choose the Max. I’m not so concerned about degree level PID control as the e61, as you’ve demonstrated, is as impacted by the thermal mass of the whole machine as the temperature in the boiler. I had a Breville previously and I never fussed over brew temperature with it. You get to know a machine and what works for you. Cheers!

      Moka pot can make very good coffee if you use the right technique, but can easily make bitter coffee from over extraction if you use the wrong method. Basically don't pack grounds in hard, fill with boiling water, and cool with cold for water as soon as it is finished ie when it splutters.

    Nice one Michael! On the temp- I’ve found the probe to be best for measuring the passing water, and it reads lower when the machine is at idle due to reading the ‘ambient temp’ of the group at that point before water passing, as heated by the thermosyphon loop. If you imagine, it’s just measuring the heat of the brass. You probably notice the temp spike at the start of the shot due to hot water from the HX entering - often if stagnant in the HX for some time, it’s over target so the flush will rid this plus helping to lift the ambient temp of the group to meet it. In my experience, something like a 91 or 92 idle may see a peak of 98 on flush of water settling to maybe 94 after 8 seconds of flush, and following this, pulling the shot fairly immediately will see quite a stable around the 94 for the shot. That’s been my experience with the E61. The 400 is a great little machine!

    • @michaelporter000
      @michaelporter000 4 месяца назад

      Great comments. This unit does have PID control of the boiler so that part of the temp is controlled. I have definitely never seen anything near 98 degrees at the group head but clearly the thermal mass of the group head resists any quick temperature changes. I wonder how fast the flow of water inside the head is during thermosyphoning. In the end I have concluded that the group head temp prevents wide enough brew water that I am able to taste. Maybe if I left it on all day when the weather is hot it may overheat enough to taste but I rarely leave it on more than a few hours. Note that the water flow rate is small when pulling a shot so the thermal mass of the head will prevent large temperature changes. When flushing the flow is much faster and temp displayed changes much more.

    I am considering getting a bellman but the one without the pressure gauge makes me a bit nervous. Do you think it would be worth it to purchase the 2 in 1 and just use for steaming with the added feature of a pressure gauge. • @michaelporter000

      No, I don't think that is normal and mine doesn't do that. There is certainly some dripping from the back flush outlet while first heating but it stops. Basket leaks would be a leak in the valve seat seal for the upper valve operated by the lever.

    • @michaelporter000
      @michaelporter000 4 месяца назад

      It depends on which model you have. The pre-millenium models that have a high and low heat setting usually have a steam heated group and then the Bong isolator is a must. If it's a later model then maybe a thinner isolator is enough. The heatsink is a bit over the top for most but it just provides an easier mount for the digital display probe. Temperature indicator stickers are probably ok instead of a digital display but are slower and harder to read.

However, lately my espresso starts to squirt a bit from IMS portafilter's filter which didn't happen but might be related to coffee beans or other things. Will do back to beans soon that didn't case it and then will confirm. Also, the overflow pipe in AirBuster sometimes can release a lot more water than it normally does - don't know why but most of the time it's steam or few drops. The shots are great though and can take out portafilter within seconds without having to wait for the remaining pressure in group (that pretty much was always building up without AirBuster) to be released somehow.

      @@dparham I'm also experiencing the problem of quick flow vs very slow. The first shot flows quicker than subsequent ones for no apparent reason - same beans, grinder settings, amount of coffee, group temperature and pressure applied from the outset so it's still a puzzle but happens less frequent now. Normally it would be caused by grinding beans too coarse or too fine but it's not the case when none of settings change.

      I only have a stainless steel moka pot and it has been fine. They can easily taste bitter which could be confused for metallic. For that, fill with boiling water, don't pack in hard, and take off the stove and put in cold water as soon as it finishes making coffee, ie when it splutters.

    I dont understand. If i follow the official bellman video i can froth milk, it's a bit inconsistent sometime i got big foam, sometime i got perfect foam. But with your technique, after emptied the air. I just got no foam at all. I think their is no enough pressure to build it width dry stream only. And i wont rely on the safety valve. I read so many bellman that exploded ... And it is not recommanded by the manual. So, actually it seem they did it on purpose.

    • @michaelporter000

      If you get no foam after emptying the air, it must be because you have developed a technique of not introducing any air yourself during steaming, probably because of this Bellman shortcoming. You need to change your technique now to intentionally add air - which is called stretching the milk. As soon as the milk is spinning, lower the jug until the tip is near the milk surface and you hear a paper tearing sound, which is air being slowly injected. Keep it there until the jug reaches body temperature and then push the tip well under the surface to complete heating the milk. Also, you can trust the safety valve. Bellman explosions are usually just the lid seal blowing out because the lid wasn't done up tight and are nothing to do with the safety valve operation.

      @@michaelporter000 Theoretically I know all that. But when I try to stretch the milk the angle with the hole just don't work, that push the milk without create bubble (why I thought, there is not enough pressure). I have drop 2 cup of milk. I played with the angle, up and down below or above he surface until the milk burn my hand. And barely zero foam. Not even large bubble. Then, when we see your example you barely stretch the milk, in a second the tip is below the surface. Another thing. I can control the stretching and get large foam or finer foam with the basic Bellman's technique. So theoretically I do stretch the milk somehow. (Maybe it's easier with the little bit of foam created by the air) Edit: after some test with water to see the vortex, and the air flow. I'm pretty sure that's a lack of pressure. If I let the pressure build over a minute after emptied the air (Bellman recommend 30 sec to 1min as soon as steam get out of the wand) without reach the safety valve. (the manual say to dont rely on it, i'm gonna follow the documentation) I have a better vortex and air intake. So my technique seems good. I will try to remove the air with more pressure few more time to see if the consistency of my froth is improving. Otherwise. i will just stuck to the official Bellman's technique.

    This is great! It still blows my mind that a manual espresso machine goes for double the price of a favored automatic. Surely it should be the other way around.

    • @michaelporter000
      @michaelporter000 7 месяцев назад

      No. Ironically I found temperature control better on the La Pavoni until I recently bought a temperature probe for the Profitec and discovered that 30 minutes heat up time is the absolute minimum and I have to use the high heat setting. Now I don't get sour shots on the Profitec but the best shots still don't seem quite as good as the La Pavoni.

      @@michaelporter000 you came to a conclusion that a lot of folks came to in my understanding. Nothing beats a manual machine in terms of shot quality. A semi automatic machine like the profitec makes brewing consistently easier at the expense of getting those really good shots. Plus, Heat exchangers come with their own limitations, heat-up times being just one of them. It seems like there ist No perfect machine. I will stick to manual brewing as you have the most control over the relevant parameters.
